For those of you that don’t know Ubuntu 9.04 was just released. Ubuntu is a Linux based operating system, it is considered to rival Windows and Mac OSX. Some of the major changes in the release are system notifications, faster file system, and faster boot times. To get the free operating system head over to the Ubuntu web site. Please if you can download the Live CD image from a torrent try to do so, because the Ubuntu servers are completely swamped with downloads. To install the Live CD image just download ISO Recorder than right click the CD image and burn to CD.

Reviewing the mac mini 2009

Well I was biased until I used this amazing machine. I always disliked Apple because of their proprietary formats and all of their locked-down software and hardware but for the price of a Mac Mini a mere 600$ I couldn’t resist taking the plunge. A lot of people will tell you that Mac is the best type of computer because it is so easy to use and it just works, unlike Windows or Linux. I would actually agree with them on that front because the new Tiger operating system is so easy to use.

The Mac Mini 2009 model

The Mac Mini was a project by Apple to make a small, easy-to-use desktop computer. The size of the Mac Mini is roughly that of a bread box or two sandwiches put on top of each other.With most computers of this size, I would think that there would be no quality or processing power, but this is where the Mini truly has me baffled. The Mac Mini has DDR3 RAM which is higher than that of most computers coming out now because the current industry standard is DDR2 RAM. To all of you none hardware-savvy people out there the difference in speed between DDR3 and DDR2 RAM is almost 75%. Than I thought, “there is no way this processor can be any good”. However when I checked I was pleasantly surprised to find a 2 gigahertz Intel Core 2 Duo in the Mac. This again is above the industry standard. Than I began to really look close at the Mac Mini and found it has an AirPort Extreme WIFI adaptor which supports wireless b/g/n which again is above the industry standard. A real surprise is that this tiny computer has a working speaker built in. Its not a huge deal but its a plus. It also has Bluetooth and the most surprising thing is, that it has a 9400 GM graphics unit. This means easy HD, and you can even play some graphics intensive games. The Mac has a built in SuperDrive (DVD/CD) and five USB 2.0 ports. It also has a Mini DVI port which I think is a major downfall because it means you must purchase multiple adapters for your displays. The most amazing thing is that it makes hardly any sound. I promise you, if you try to hear one of these, you can’t. It makes less noise than your TV on standby mode, yes its that quiet. So if any of you want a cheap, affordable way to have a Mac, I would really recommend the Mac Mini. It is one of the best computers I have ever used and for the price, you can’t beat it.

Jailbreaking- Freeing your iphone/ipod touch – Windows

Before I tell you about Jailbreaking, I’m going to warn you of the risks associated with Jailbreaking. Most risks are due to the fact that your not running Apple software. Your iTouch’s or iPhone’s warranty will be voided and you may not be eligible to receive Apple support; however, when I went to an Apple Store I still received Apple support. On the upside, Jailbreaking allows you to install cracked applications which, tho illegal, are a good way to test out an expensive application before you decided to purchase it. Another plus of Jailbreaking is that you can do some things with your iPhone or iTouch that are not currently possible only using the Apple software. An example would be tethering your iphone to your computer wirelessly. So heres how you go about doing it.

Jailbreaking your iPod Touch or iPhone

1st. Go to this link and download the Program Quickpwn http://miphone.ca/iphone-dev/QuickPwn225-2.zip.

2nd. Now run Quickpwn and plug in your iTouch. It should automatically find your firmware file. If it doesn’t, than on Windows Vista the firmware file is located in the C:\Users\your-user-name\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates\. For Windows XP C:\Documents and Settings\your-user-name\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates\.

3rd. When you find your firmware, click (next). When you’ve done that, click on Cydia check box and Installer check box. If you want the QuickPwn logo when you turn your iPod or iPhone on, check the box then click (next).

4th. Follow the list of on-screen instructions that appear in QuickPwn.

5th. When QuickPwn has finished simply turn on your iPhone or iPod Touch.

The Headphone Hack

The Headphone Hack

The headphone hack is actually a very simple change to the headphones role in a computer.

1st. Locate the audio ports on the back of your computer.

2nd. Normally you would plug your headphones, just ordinary headphones such as ones that you would plug into a CD player into the green port which is for audio output. In this case, plug them into the red or pinkish port which is for audio input, yes you can use any pair of headphones as a microphone.

3rd. Log into your computer and configure the audio microphone. It should be in the Windows Control Panel Settings or on an Apple system, Sound Options or on a Linux, System Preferences than pick Sound from the drop-down menu.

4th. Now speak into your headsets and just use them like you would a regular microphone.
